Mass Intentions

Infinite graces come from the Sacrifice of the Mass.

Inscriptions on the tombs the Roman catacombs of the second century demonstrate that the tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church.

When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions:

  1. To offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church.
  2. To offer the Mass in union with and for the good of the whole Church.
  3. To offer the Mass for a particular intention.

When a person asks a priest to offer a Mass for a particular intention, usually, a stipend is given, creating in justice, an obligation that must be satisfied. Canon law states: “The faithful who make an offering so that Mass can be celebrated for their intention, contribute to the good of the Church, and by that offering they share in the Church’s concern for the support of its ministers and its activities” (Codex Iuris Canonici, 946).

Masses can be offered for various intentions.

Infinite graces that benefit one’s soul flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass. Although the most common practice is to have Mass offered for the deceased, an individual may also ask a priest to offer a Mass in thanksgiving or for the intentions of another person.
